Proof Beyond A Reasonable Doubt

In order to be convicted of any criminal offense, the State’s Attorney must prove beyond a reasonable doubt all the elements of the crime with which you are charged. This is a high burden. You do not have to prove your innocence. Proof beyond a reasonable doubt is a much more onerous standard than the civil standard which requires a mere preponderance of the evidence.
